Centre Church Hosts

Speaker On Gender Identity

LYNNFIELD – Centre Congregational Church, located on the corner of Summer and Main Streets, will continue their “Open and Affirming” film and discussion series on May 6th at 7PM with special guest speaker Hadley Smith.  Hadley will discuss parts of the documentary film Call Me Malcolm, which is about a transgendered seminary student’s  struggle with faith, love and gender identity.  Produced by Filmworks, Inc. and The United Church of Christ, Call Me Malcolm was the first feature film intended for theatrical release to be produced by the church.

As an “Open and Affirming” congregation, Centre Church welcomes all people into the full life and ministry of the church including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people.   The “Open and Affirming” film series is intended to educate attendees about differences in human sexuality and gender identity.

Hadley Smith co-founded an organization called Translate in 2006. Translate is an education and advocacy organization that provides training and support to institutions to address the specific concerns of trans and/or gender non-conforming individuals. Along with speaking on many panels about gender identity and expression, Hadley has run workshops for Boston-area social justice groups and has served as a consultant for the New York Times. Hadley graduated from Wellesley College in 2006 with a B.A. in history and plans to pursue graduate research in nationalisms & sexualities and histories of consciousness.

This special presentation will be held Tuesday May 6th, at 7 p.m. in Centre Church’s upstairs theater room.   Admission is free and open to the public.  The regular film series will continue the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. thereafter.  For more information contact the church office at (781) 334-3050.
